If you’ve ever stood in a centuries-old cathedral and wondered what stories its stones could tell, or felt that spark of connection between a place, a moment in time, and a novel set there, then The Historic Traveler is your kind of destination. Founded by Jackie Lapin, a seasoned globetrotter who has explored over 50 countries and amassed a stunning archive of 40,000 travel photographs, the blog is a rich tapestry of historical immersion.

The Historic Traveler was born from a desire to go beyond the page and share the highlights from the 500+ places I’ve visited and photographed in the world–along with the books that make history come to life.

For decades Jackie Lapin followed her heart to historic localities in more than 50 countries and amassed a database of 40,000 stunning photographic images. And when she wasn’t traveling, she was reading books that further informed her explorations and indulged her sense of escape.

Lapin combines her love of history, travel and books of historical relevance into an online community where others who share her wanderlust can immerse themselves in the storied histories of cities, regions and landmarks all over the world at www.TheHistoricTraveler.com.

A new eMagazine and digital destination is now live, captivating history buffs, travel enthusiasts, and fans of historical novels. The Historic Traveler offers an editorial-rich platform that blends beautifully written features, an eMagazine, striking photography, travel guides, resource directories and more to bring the past vividly to life.

Today, we’re sharing a fantastic conversation that Emily from KWE Publishing had with Jackie Lapin, creator of The Historic Traveler, which marries “travel to the books that bring history to life.”

When Jackie Lapin turned 70, she realized it was time to stop waiting for “someday.” After decades of promoting other people’s stories, she wanted to live out her own.
“I hit 70 and realized there were fewer years ahead of me than behind me,” Jackie said. “I didn’t know how much longer I’d be able to carry a 50-pound suitcase and three cameras on my back, so I figured I’d better just do this.”

With the years advancing on me, I decided that it was high time for me to start ticking off the “bucket-list” historic cities that I had yet to visit and photograph. I began by selecting revered historic destinations Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Milan and Dubrovnik. But it was my history-loving travel agent who insisted that I add Lucerne, Switzerland, to my list as a must-see destination and I am still thanking her.

Many travelers are captivated by the grandeur of major historic cities—Paris, London, Edinburgh, Madrid, Prague, and Vienna—but there’s something truly special about smaller destinations that exude historic charm without being overwhelming.

When Vincent Van Gogh left behind the bustling energy of Paris in search of tranquility, warmth, and brighter landscapes, he found his muse in the charming city of Arles, France.
Arriving in February 1888, he immersed himself in the vibrant surroundings, creating over 300 paintings and drawings—including some of his most famous works:
The Night Café, The Yellow Room, Starry Night Over the Rhône, and L’Arlésienne.

Chester, the locale of Jan Foster’s Anarchic Destiny book 2 in the Naturae Series, is a town where Roman legions once marched and medieval merchants once bustled under timbered eaves. Its red sandstone walls and narrow streets tell stories of emperors, bishops, and artists who have left their marks across centuries—not to mention a vampire named Henry Fitzroy.

What would the City of Light be without the poetry of its bridges? Arcing across the Seine like stone verses in a love letter to the past, the bridges of Paris offer more than a way to cross from Left Bank to Right. They are time travelers, storytellers, and sentinels, each with its own soul and saga.

History is writ large all around the world. For historic travel lovers and people who adore history books or historic novels, there is nothing more thrilling than seeing where it all happened.

Happy Halloween and welcome to PLW’s October Fifth Friday. Today’s guest blogger is Jackie Lapin, the mastermind of The Historic Traveler, which invites you to “Marry your travel to the books that bring history to life.”
